This paper analyzes the application of a socioeconomic index able to point out areas with the greatest potential for occurrence of regeneration of vegetation. Rural population variation and elderly rural population were used, planted area variation data of temporary and permanent crops, as well as variation of the effective herds, as well as an indicator of production pulpwood, which aimed to identify a reconversion of the area for forestry activity. The index was applied to all municipalities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. To perform the validation of the methodology, we selected the municipality of Canguçu, with the second highest index value. We selected the years 2000 to 2010 images. After recognition site and withdrawal of samples for training were obtained as a result of the confirmation that the municipality has been altered in land cover with increase of native forest class and regeneration areas.
